Great value mobile contract deals for students in 2018

Prioritising your money is key to surviving student life. We have to balance having all the things we need with having the money to pay for them and a smartphone with a chunky data allowance features highly in that. Nobody is going to want to live without one but they can be expensive.

Jamie Kavanagh, contributor at Broadband Genie took the three providers ranked highest in Ofcom’s ‘Choosing the best broadband, mobile and landline provider – Comparing Service Quality 2017’ survey and looked at what contracts they have for students. Those companies were giffgaff, Tesco and EE who ranked highest for satisfaction according to the survey. After all, there’s no point saving money if you’re not looked after!

giffgaff

giffgaff are owned and run by O2 and use its network. The company doesn’t offer student discounts but is already known as a low cost operator with no contracts. You can buy ‘goodybags’ to cover your monthly use or PAYG. The lack of a contract is a big plus for giffgaff but you do have to buy your own phone. Fine if you already have one, not so good if you don’t.
Goodybag bundles range from £5 for 500Mb, 150 minutes and 500 texts up to Always On which includes 20GB of data, unlimited calls and texts and costs £25 per month.

Tesco mobile

Like giffgaff, Tesco mobile doesn’t have specific student offers, but it doesn’t need to as the contracts offer good value anyway. A Samsung Galaxy S9 with 2GB of data, 5000 minutes and texts is available for £33.25 per month over 36 months. A SIM-only deal can be yours from only £10 a month which includes 3GB of data, 1000 minutes and 5000 texts.
If you’re okay with a longer contract, these offer decent value, especially given their high satisfaction rating by Ofcom.

EE

EE does offer student discounts and is also highly rated by Ofcom. The same Samsung Galaxy S9 costs £58 a month here. That includes the phone, 30GB of data and unlimited calls and texts. SIM-only plans range from £11 per month for 250MB of data and unlimited calls and texts to £35 for 40GB of data and unlimited calls and texts.
As a student you get 20% off those prices plus a 500MB data safety net and six months of Apple Music for free. Contracts are for 24 months with EE.

When you get your new phone or new mobile contract, don’t forget to download the SPCE app. It’s the easiest way to find student accommodation!
